I absolutely love the Habitat For Humanity Restore to find furniture gems and flip them.  My parents scored this file cabinet last summer and we flipped it with chalk paint as well.

In the past, I was good for going to buy and brand new super expensive but low-quality bedroom set. But my now smarter self knew I could do better and get more of what I wanted for less out of my pocket. Just a little sweat equity and it would be all worth it!

I grabbed a full-sized bed when we first moved into the house for my nephew two years ago. Then I painted it using the Black DecoArt chalky paint last year and topped it with wax.

I absolutely loved the look!

So now that bed is being handed down to my son and he needed a little more drawer space and toy storage I scored a hideous dresser and a cool white storage cube shelf at Habit. Both for sixty bucks combined!

There are so many great places that you can find furniture to upcycle, here is a list of some of my favorites:

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Yard sales/Garage sales
  • Goodwill

I decided to the dresser and cube black to match the bed.  And since they would probably be subject to a little more impact from RJ, I topped them with a coat of polyurethane for more durability.

The outcome is simply beautiful.

DecoArt Chalk Paint Is Good For Covering Imperfections

Chalk paint is perfect for covering imperfections as both pieces have them but you can barely tell.

Also, it gives perfect coverage, sometimes with one coat. But definitely with two.  And it is worth noting, I never use a primer with it.

How to Apply Chalky Paint

I usually like to use a roller but with chalk paint, I like the texture the paintbrush leaves in the paint. But you could use whatever you prefer.

I actually feel like the roller brush also absorbs more of the paint too.

Upcycled Dresser With DecoArt Chalk Paint

This bedroom makeover is coming along nicely. I am still looking for the perfect storage cubes to go in the storage shelf for all his cars, toys and random stuff he accumulates.

Materials

  • DecoArt Chalk Paint (I used 2)
  • Polyurethane

Tools

Instructions

  1. I started by taking the dresser apart. Removing the hardware from the drawers and setting the drawers aside from the dresser.separate drawers for upcyled dresser
  2. Clean dresser and drawers. I just used a cloth and wipe it down. There was a lot of dust.dust on dresser before painting
  3. Apply the first coat and allow to dry. Chalk paint dries really quickly. It only took about thirty minutes for it to dry.
  4. There was one part that needed repair in the corner, so I glued and clamped it before doing my second coat.
  5. Apply second coat.
  6. Once all dried, cover/top with wax or polyurethane.
  7. Reassemble all the pieces.
  8. Add new hardware. (if you choose)
